Athletes – Cbd Oil helps recovery

cbd for athletes, cbd oil, nutrition

While using cannabis as pre-workout supplement may sound crazy, it is not uncommon for elite athletes to use cannabis as a recovery tool as well. After an intense workout or training session, you may be tired, sore, or even nauseous. Many people in this situation may toss back two or three Ibuprofen, crack a beer to take the edge off and call it good. However, what you may not realize is that NSAID drugs like Ibuprofen and Aleve are extremely dangerous, especially when used with regularity. If deaths from the toxic effects of NSAID drugs were tabulated separately, these drug toxicities would constitute the 15th most common cause of death in the United States. Therefore, we suggest athletes stick to a more powerful, less toxic, and naturally occurring substance like cannabis. In this guide, we will help you understand the benefits of cannabis as a recovery tool and how to garner these benefits in your own post-workout regimen.

Nutrition helps post-workout recovery

Protein

In order to produce our own proteins, we must consume proteins. Protein supplementation, both pre- and post-workout, generally improves recovery, muscle growth and strength2. However, specific amounts and types of protein can promote greater improvements in physical fitness. For example, drinking milk after a workout can promote increases in muscle size and strength while decreasing body fat. To be more specific, the amino acid known as leucine, particularly a dose of 3-4 grams, can promote maximum muscle gain. However, fast-acting carbohydrates such as glucose are needed because the release of insulin that follows carbohydrate intake promotes tissue growth.

Carbs

Carbohydrate intake after intense exercise3 is also essential in order to replenish stores of energy that may have been exhausted, preferably within one hour after finishing. Of course, rehydration should never be overlooked after intense exercise. This includes both water and electrolytes such as sodium, which reduce urine losses and are needed for cellular functions, but are lost in significant amounts through sweat. Approximately 25-50% more water than what has been lost through sweat is required for proper rehydration, and this should be taken within 4-6
hours after exercise.

Post-Workout Recovery Tips using Hemp & Cannabidiol

But where can hemp and cannabinoids play a role in post-exercise recovery?  Some cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol (CBD), have been shown to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and painkilling (analgesic) effects. This is relevant because strenuous exercise increases oxidative stress4 and therefore inflammation, while moderate antioxidant supplementation may reduce the damage.  In pre-clinical research, CBD was found to be a stronger antioxidant than vitamin C or E5, able to protect cells against damage caused by reactive oxygen molecules. However, isolated CBD has been found to only exert anti-inflammatory and painkilling effects in a limited dose range6.

In fact, another cannabinoid known as cannabigerol7 (CBG) has been shown to reduce inflammatory markers and increase levels of one of the body’s own antioxidants, superoxide dismutase.

Besides the cannabinoids, terpenoids8 present in hemp extracts also possess anti-inflammatory and analgesic abilities. Additionally, the terpenoid myrcene is recognised as a sleep aid and may be a muscle relaxant, which could help athletes rest after intensive exercise. Alpha-pinene has been found to help dilate (widen) airways, which may increase oxygen supply and therefore aid clearance of lactic acid and tissue repair. However, while whole hemp extracts look like a promising aid to post-exercise recovery, they should be used alongside standard recommendations of rest, rehydration and nutrition.

On a Mission to Minimise thanks to Intermittent Fasting

On a Mission to Minimise – Thanks to Intermittent Fasting

See the source image

Since I started intermittent fasting a few weeks ago, never did I imagine all the energy I would gain, not only energy but motivation to get moving on my goals and, well life in general.  So, I stop eating at 6pm, sleep by about 11 and up at 530am for my morning meditation and yoga.  Forget breakfast completely which was mega strange at first as I loved a giant smoothie about 9 ish.  Then 12 comes along and that was my normal hour for lunch, but I am just far too busy decluttering, cleaning and general odd jobbing it.  I time my lunch this week to fit in with my 30 minutes of TV for the day.   I just can’t miss Home and Away, a great Australian Soap.  So, I have a massive salad with all my favourite things and each day I add something different.

Okay so my mission this week is to minimise my life, I have been on this mission on and off for about a year now.  On a good day I load up my car with clothes and off to my friends and sisters house to deliver.  The bad days, I have nothing to wear and am told by my loving sister that I am always in black and look bla….queue running to the shops for a bright orange top only to bring it home to discover I DON’T SUIT BLOODY ORANGE, so another trip to my friends to deliver her new top.

This week however is a good week for me, I have stuck to all my daily disciplines which makes me feel amazing, I have spent a good 10 hours decluttering my home and now for the dreaded loft.  I know this will take me some time as I am 38 years old and still have my diaries, drawings and birthday cards from day dot.  It is funny what we become attached to in life but I am on my journey to become less attached and more present in the moment.

WHY? What is so great about having less stuff?

  • I have more money to experience more things
  • I have more time to do things I enjoy and discover new things that I may or may not be good at – So far interior design, glitter glue guns and refurbishing old furniture – Not very good at any but I had fun finding that out.
  • For me, I don’t wanna spend half an hour searching through junk drawers for a pair of scissors..gaaahhhhh…
  • Yes, it is true a clear and decluttered house gives you a much clearer mind

In my twenties I travelled about and had only one suitcase to my name, I lived each day at a time, my only worry back then was if I had enough money for a beer (actually it was more vodka red bull but I just thought beer sounded more cool)

Then I settled down and started a family and responsibility hit in, even the word responsibility makes me shudder.  With that I fell into the trap of STUFF and kids like STUFF.  I always felt like I was behind everyone else as they had their jobs, their mortgages and kids etc and because I was away travelling my Life started later? Isnt it funny how we say that – my life started..like we haven’t been living till then…weird.

Things just never seemed quite right though for me, I don’t really care about money, clothes houses cars and stuff and I think since I stumbled upon mindfulness after some horrible health conditions that I really began to take stock of my life.

So I shall keep going on my inner journey to improve myself and what I see in my outer world shall reflect this.  A nice Clear calm environment to go with my new improved calmer mind.

This month I am grateful for discovering intermittent fasting as it has given me a new lease on life and is helping me to achieve my daily goals of remaining.

*if your looking for more info on Intermittent Fasting and Minimalism I have included some of my fave youtubers below

Markus and carl

Dr Pompa is big on fasting – I myself haven’t managed to fast yet but the intermittent fasting is much easier for me at the moment, not to say I wont get up to a fast eventually.

http://www.drpompa.com/Health-Tips/in… Intermittent fasting unlike traditional fasts or caloric restrictive diets are safe for weight loss and reversing inflammatory conditions. Intermittent fasting for weight loss avoids nutrient depletion and muscle wasting.

Below is Thomas Thomas DeLauer, he knows his stuff, highly intelligent guy who clearly puts what he teaches into practice.

Basically the benefit of intermittent fasting more so comes from the secretion of human growth hormone. I wanna focus this video mostly on that HGH secretion because that is such a big component.

There are a multitude of different reasons why intermittent fasting is great, and why it’s great to do from TIME TO TIME.

Okay so now onto Minimalist – Well I watched the documentary Minamalism and I follow these two guys on their podcasts and youtube videos

Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus, better known to their 2 million readers as The Minimalists, are the authors of several bestselling books, including EVERYTHING THAT REMAINS. They spoke at TEDxWhitefish about minimalism, the value of community, and discovering what makes people rich. For more info about The Minimalists visit http://theminimalists.com

Intermittent fasting – my little secret.

nutrition

All my life I have been brought up to eat three meals a day plus supper and snacks when I was hungry.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, I was told.

At high school I never much felt like breakfast which drove my mum crazy. I was hungry by 1030 so I had a sandwich then an hour later off to the dinner hall for my nutritious and healthy bowl of chips and beans. We got an ice cream van that would visit the school at lunch time so off I popped for some wham bars and irn bru bars or penny sweets covered in sugar, enough to make your eyes water. Then on the way home a lovely can of fizzy juice and packet of crisps.

So that was growing up in the 90s for me, always eating, snacking grazing on junk food.

Fast forward many years and I am living with my boyfriend. Now his way of eating is majorly different to mine. He doesn’t eat in the daytime..wtf..how does he not collapse and die. If I go past lunch time without eating I am a hangry mess ready to pass out until I get my fix of food.

So years and years of me trying to get him to eat breakfast and making him pack lunches I just give in.. and in a strop usually. Now my boyfriend doesn’t have a sit down job he is a window cleaner and the fastest around. He is up and down his ladder hundreds of times a day. He routinely gets up at 7 am every day and works till tea time..yes he eats tea. Then he is back out again at night to walk around all the work he has done during the day to get payment from his customers.

How does he do it?? On such little fuel??

So it’s only taken me 11 years of being with him to start looking into this.

To be fair it took him 9 years of being with me to become vegetarian so I feel we may be equal.

Okay so I did my research.. youtube of course..where else!! I watched endless Ted talks on the subject and found some fab people who were already doing it. Dr pompa does fasting, markus and cara brotman and lots of guests of joe rogan. These people are in peak condition.

So I had to try this for myself to find out what will happen. I am on week one so very early stages. I stop eating at 6pm and start again at 12 the following day. I hope to push it further this week as I feel amazing.

I am getting so much more done and am not constantly in the kitchen. I have eaten pretty healthy for the last ten years and have juiced and made smoothies daily for the past 5 years but am always looking at ways I can increase my energy, strength and mental focus. I think I have found the way for me, but I am not telling my boyfriend this…not yet. All these years of moaning at him for not eating will no doubt be thrown in my fave like a giant custard pie.

So for now this is my little secret and I shall see how I go over the following months.

My Green Juice Journey – from pain to happiness

nutrition

Juicing greens isn’t just for adults but kids love them too. I was so surprised that my little boy would drink this one as it wasn’t a sweet smoothie but quite a bitter green juice. He absolutley loved it and really enjoyed making it as well.

Such a great way to add vegetables into their diet.

I started juicing greens for health reasons. I developed neuralgia in my face and constant pins and needles in my hands. At night the pain was just so severe I had to raise my hands over my head as they felt like they were on fire. I had many visits to doctors and had mri scans, I even had healthy teeth taken out as I was just so sure the pain was coming from my teeth.

I was so down and low from the pain and just wasn’t coping with life. To make matters worse I felt like a complete failure as I was a complementary therapist and couldn’t cure myself.

I found a guy called Dan Mcdonald – the life regenerator on YouTube and he talked a lot about juicing and raw foods. I had nothing to loose so I bought a juicer and started juicing. I ate nothing but green juices for three weeks and visited an acupuncturist twice a week and well the pain went away as if it had never been there at all. I also discovered later down the line after getting into meditation that my pain was brought upon me by my thoughts, my over thinking and constant worrying and living in the future.

So I thank my Pain as without that awful time in my life I would never have never discovered juicing and meditation and I would have never realised how important it is to look after ME first.

And now my kids can experience the wonderful benefits of freshly made green juice and amazingly tasty healthy smoothies.

Keto Coffee

nutrition

I am not a lover of coffee, I have never tried it and just the smell makes me wanna gag okay so a little exaggeration but I just don’t like the stuff.  .  My partner however loves it, if he could bathe in it I’m sure he would.  I just don’t understand  how he manages to sleep so well after drinking a cup or ten.

I worry about his coffee antics so I started researching healthier coffee drinks for him and that’s when I heard about the bullet proof coffee.  I couldn’t afford to buy another supplement this month so I found this amazing video and I had all ingredients in my cupboard which was a bonus.

Difference Between Hemp and Bioactive Oil?

cbd oil, nutrition

What is the difference between Hemp & Bioactive CBD Oil
With so many to choose from it can be hard to make a decision upon which one would suit yourself.  I found these two Oils from Flora fusion, one is the classic UK manufactured Hemp seed oil and the other is the Bioactive CBD Oil from the EU. Although both are ‘CBD Oils’ the two are very different. It is worth understanding the differences between the two before deciding which is best for you. So, here is the difference.

Hemp Seed Oil infused with CBD

Our UK manufactured CBD oil is made from organic cold pressed hemp seed oil which is fantastically rich in essential proteins and fatty acids. The seed itself is made up of about 32% of an edible oil that contains 80% of the essential acids. These include Omega, 3, Omega 6, Linolenic acid, alpha & Gamma-linolenic acid and stearidonic acid.
Omega 3 is extremely important for the human metabolism and is known to reduce inflammation and the potential of cancers and cardiovascular disease while increasing cognitive ability and brain functions. Similar to Omega 3, Omega 6 also plays an essential role in brain function, normal growth and development. It also helps to regulate, skin and hair growth, maintain healthy bones, regulate metabolism and maintain the reproductive system.

Linolenic acid is a fatty acid that (like Omega 3 & 6) cannot be produced by the human body and must be acquired through diet. The consumption of Linolenic acid differs in individuals however, it is essential in the make-up of cell membranes and there has been some evidence to suggest that it helps to prevent cardiovascular diseases. Finally, Stearidonic acid (also known as Moronic Acid) is known to have anti-viral properties and is part of the process of producing anti-HIV medicines.
All of these properties make Hemp oil a brilliant supplement for concentration, cognitive ability and things like hair growth. Like most oils, hemp oil is not soluble in water but is easily consumed and can be applied topically. It is a very durable and versatile CBD oil product.
Bioactive CBD Oil
The Bioactive CBD oil is specifically designed for consumption rather than being applied topically or added to other ingredients. Unlike the CBD infused hemp oil, it is water soluble so can be easily mixed with tea, vegetable or fruit juices to make the consumption of CBD as easy as possible. Everything in the Bioactive oil is exclusively derived from plants and is a multi-spectrum product that contains a whole host of different cannabinoids and compounds that enhance each other to promote health and wellbeing. This is sometimes referred to as the Entourage Effect.

Curcumin, Myrcene, Caryophyllene, Pinene, Limonene, Linalool, CBD, CBC, CBN and CBG are all included within this product which are organic compounds found in a multitude of different products, foods and vegetation. Caryophyllene, in particular, is associated with stimulating the CB2 receptor (in the Endocannabinoid System) and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, neuroprotective, anxiolytic, antidepressant and antialcoholism activity in mice. Studies are trying to prove whether these effects are shared in humans. CBD, CBC, CBN and CBG are all cannabinoids which bind with the endocannabinoid system. Further information on these cannabinoids can be found by clicking the link.
This product is 100% natural and all the ingredients have been selected so that they can work together and interact with the endocannabinoid system.

MCT Oil – Another Great Oil to add to your diet.

MCT OIL

MCT stands for Medium-Chain triglycerides which are a type of saturated fatty acid that has been associated with a range of health benefits; most notably cognitive function and better weight management. MCT’s, which can also be called MCFAs (Medium Chain Fatty Acids) are thought to be missing from the diets of those who eat a ‘standard western’ diet. This could be because we don’t have regular access have all been told to be afraid of ‘saturated fats’! But it is like anything- in moderation, the right saturated fats can actually be beneficial to our body functions.

Where do Medium Chain Triglycerides come from?

MCT’s or MCFA’s can be found in their highest concentrations in Coconut Oil which is made up to 62-65% of MCT fatty acids but they can also be found in smaller quantities in foods such as butter (from grass-fed cows), Cheeses, Palm Oil, Whole Milk and full-fat yoghurts. It is a fact that medium chain triglycerides fatty acids are easier to digest than long-chain triglycerides (LCTs) and might have even had benefits related to heart health, prevention of obesity and brain function.

Here is a list of MCT Oil Benefits:

  • Maintain a healthy weight – Since both make you feel full
  • Reduce Stored Body Fat as they Raise your Metabolic Function
  • Have More Energy
  • Think More Clearly
  • Experience Better Digestion
  • Balance Hormone Levels
  • Improve Your Mood
  • Fight Bacterial Infections & Viruses
  • Absorb Fat-Soluble Nutrients from Various Foods
  • MCTs are also seen as promoting fat oxidation and reduced food intake. Interest in MCTs has been expressed by endurance athletes and the bodybuilding community.

Why is MCT Oil Good for you?

All types of fatty acids are made up of strings of carbon and hydrogen; the Medium chains are between 6-12 carbon atoms long. Medium-chain fats are very easily digested and they are sent directly to your liver. They are easily digested because the body uses less energy to break down the carbon bonds, so they require very few special enzymes to absorb into the liver. Medium chain triglycerides create a thermogenic effect and the positively alter your metabolism which has sparked many scientific claims that these fats are burned as fuel rather than being stored in the body as fat, making them perfect for those on a ketonic diet(one of the more well known MCT Oil benefits). Alongside this, they are known to have the capability to help the body battle bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites & contain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The medium chain triglyceride oil benefits are much of the reason for Coconut oil is one of the most beneficial oils on the planet.

mct oil - mct oil benefits

Why are MCT oils good as a CBD carrier oil?

When thinking of how CBD interacts with carrier oils, it is essential that we attach it to a healthy oil that enhances the effects and absorption of the cannabinoid into your Liver. The CBD compound attaches very easily to the medium-chain fatty acids and is absorbed in the same way that the fats are. MCT’s are a strong binding for Cannabinoids and can be added to many foods. MCT is antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral & has been shown to reduce bad bacteria while leaving good bacterias alone in human biological systems. As MCT is a fat it is a good fat for the body to process as it’s breakdown requires significantly less excess energy than other fatty acids. MCTs passively diffuse from the GI tract into the lymphatic system & act like an inert source of energy that the human body finds easy to metabolise and absorb.

Compared to hemp oil, when the CBD is added to the MCT oils your body can absorb it much quicker and easier so it means that the amount of CBD your liver is absorbing is increased. Simply put, the MCT oil is a much more efficient delivery system than other carrier oils, such as hemp oil. CBD combined with the MCT oil benefits can only mean good things.

Superfood – CBD Hemp – Preventative

cbd oil, nutrition

People start finding out about CBD oil mainly due to the fact that they are in pain either mentally or physically.  Normally people have tried almost everything and are at the end of their tether when they come across CBD oils.  But what a lot of people don’t know is that CBD mixed with pure hemp oil is actually an amazing superfood.  I have been a vegetarian since I was 10 and have gone through stages of  my life when I have been a very unhealthy anaemic junk food vegetarian.  When health problems arose I looked into ways to make myself feel better.  I have added a variety of health food, superfood, supplements into my diet over the years and came across CBD oils.  The more I research into the oils the more I find out about the most amazing benefits.

CBD Hemp Oil is considered to be a Super Food – it offers a complete full spectrum of natural proteins, with all 20 amino acids used by the human body, including all eight essential amino acids. It contains the perfect ratio of omega fatty acids 3, 6 & 9. CBD Hemp has high levels of enzymes, fiber, vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C, D, and E and is rich in essential minerals such as calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium, manganese, and phosphorus. CBD is packed full of natural carotenes, flavonoids, ketones, nitrogenous compounds and terpenes.
There are more than 500 trace compounds in hemp working synergistically together with CBD to render its powerful nutrition. Scientists call this “the entourage effect.” So there is no single magic constituent standing alone that gives CBD hemp its myriad of health values. Each compound in CBD full spectrum CBD oil plays off of another and this is what makes this cannabis plant so special.

CTFO CBD hemp oil does not contain the intoxicating cannabinoid called THC. – This is a misconception. Since hemp only has a trace amount of THC, it’s not enough to make it illegal or get someone high. HempWorx CBD hemp oil is extracted and tested to have less than <.3% THC content, which is so negligible it cannot produce a high. And because of this negligible THC count, this renders CBD hemp oil legal in all 50 states. Taking CBD hemp oil will not give a positive reading for marijuana on a drug test. So this is another reason why CBD hemp oil is so popular.

My Smoothies Over the Years

nutrition

As a therapist I am always helping others. But I discovered over time that If we don’t firstly look after ourselves then what good are we to anyone else. I have been drinking smoothies everyday for the last 4 years and I absolutely love them and they truly make you feel fabulous. It gets so addictive, trying out new recipes and seeing what sort of flavours you like. It has been trial and error over the years but that is the fun of it all. Although my kids may not agree. But they have been converted and are now making their own.

Some of my recipes.

Very basic just gives you an idea of what you can pop into your smoothie.

Also you don’t need to just stick to a breakfast smoothie, enjoy them throughout the day. I sometimes will pour mine into a big flask if I am out and about. Plus you don’t need to spend £££ on expensive equipment. When you are starting out just buy a blender and get going. Kids love smoothies and is a fabulous way of getting the goodness into them plus they can join in and make them on their own.
